Employers and Employees

With four decades of experience litigating cases involving workplace rights, we have developed a niche in advising, counseling and representing individual employees, small and medium sized employers, in matters that involve employment contracts, illegal workplace discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, public-sector statutory and constitutional rights, unpaid wages (FLSA violations) and compensation disputes, and non-compete/non-solicitation agreements.

Whether our client is an employee or employer, a municipality or a business with a dispute with a governmental entity, or an accident victim with a catastrophic injury, our goal is simple: To provide our clients with effective, high quality legal representation in pursuit of the best attainable result or solution.

While we have earned a reputation among Michigan lawyers as being among the best in representing individual employees in employment rights disputes and employment litigation, we are one of the only law firms in southeast Michigan to be recognized by US News & World Report’s Best Law Firms as one of the best on both sides of the management-employee fence.  The Firm has earned the prestigious AV-Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Three of our lawyers are Fellows in the prestigious College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, four have been recognized by Best Lawyers in America, and six have by recognized by  Michigan SuperLawyers for being among the best when it comes to employment rights law and employment litigation.  Because of our experience on both sides of labor and employment disputes, in the private and public sectors, we can bring multiple perspectives to advising our clients, developing strategies, anticipating potential claims and defenses, and plan for what “the other side” will raise or pursue in a case.

Personal Injury

For over 40 years, Paul Hines has built a reputation as one of the finest medical malpractice and catastrophic personal injury litigators in southeast Michigan, including recognition by Best Lawyers in America and Michigan SuperLawyers. Greg Jones has been a Michigan SuperLawyers Rising Star in personal injury litigation, particularly with automobile negligence cases involving death and catastrophic injuries. You won’t see us competing for automobile accident and slip and fall injury clients on freeway billboards or daytime local television commercials.  Our personal injury group handles the complicated, wrongful death and serious injury claims by victims failed by doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers, catastrophic automobile and construction injuries, wrongful death and nursing home negligence cases.

Our personal injury law group includes Paul HinesGregory Jones and Barbara Urlaub.

Appeals

Appeals are often a critical to the cases we pursue.  Many times we have to defend against an appeal after we win, sometimes we have to appeal adverse rulings.  Appeals can occur early in litigation, but more often they occur after a long hard battle and disposition at trial.  Our appellate work is done in-house.  In fact, we also handle appellate work for other law firms.  Barbara Urlaub began her law career as a Pre-Hearing Attorney in the Michigan Court of Appeals, and subsequently served as the Law Clerk to the late-Hon. George LaPlata in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Her appellate experience includes representation of clients before the United States Court of Appeals, the Michigan Court of Appeals, and the Michigan Supreme Court, and in the case of adverse agency decisions, appeals to the Michigan Circuit Courts.  Barbara has been recognized as Top Lawyer in Appellate Law by DBusiness.
